End User License Agreement (EULA)

Obscura Vault end user license agreement (EULA): license granted, what it unlocks, restrictions, warranties and liability.

Obscura Vault — agreement version 1.1, October 2026.

This English translation is provided for convenience. The French version of this agreement prevails.

This agreement is made between Oorun (“the Publisher”) and any individual or legal entity that installs or uses the Obscura Vault software (“the User”). Installing, copying or using the software constitutes unreserved acceptance of this agreement. If you do not accept its terms, do not install or use the software.

The Software is intended exclusively for professionals, for the needs of their business: archives, institutions, companies, associations and self-employed workers. It is not offered to consumers within the meaning of the preliminary article of the French Consumer Code.

1. Purpose

This agreement sets out the conditions under which the Publisher grants the User a right to use Obscura Vault, a macOS application for the preservation of digital files (SHA-256 fingerprints, signed .obf archives, integrity checks, copies on storage media and offsite, database backups, preservation certificates), together with its documentation and updates (together, “the Software”).

2. Ownership

The Software is protected by the French Intellectual Property Code and by international treaties. It is licensed, not sold. The Publisher retains all intellectual property rights in the Software, including its code, interface, documentation, name and logo. Nothing in this agreement transfers ownership of the Software to the User.

3. License grant

The Publisher grants the User a personal, non-exclusive, non-assignable and non-transferable license to install and use the Software on the Mac computers the User owns or controls, for the User’s own needs or those of the User’s organization. The Software is obtained from the Publisher’s member area, with an Obscura account and an Obscura Vault license, including the free plan.

Without a license, the Software lets the User browse the library, import folders, verify the integrity of files and archives, restore archives, and back up and restore the database. Creating archives, sending offsite and issuing certificates require an Obscura Vault license, attached to the User’s account and verified with the Publisher’s license server. The number of devices, the limits, the term and the price of the license are those set out in the terms of acquisition; failing that, the license is granted for an indefinite term, within the limits of this agreement.

4. Restrictions

Except to the extent expressly permitted by law, in particular article L. 122-6-1 of the French Intellectual Property Code, the User shall not:

  • copy the Software, except for one backup copy;
  • modify, adapt or translate the Software, or create derivative works;
  • decompile, disassemble or attempt to derive the source code of the Software;
  • rent, lend, resell, sublicense or distribute the Software to third parties;
  • remove or alter the proprietary notices, the signature or the notarization of the Software;
  • circumvent the technical protection measures of the Software, including the license check.

5. User data

The files, the library, the .obf archives, the database backups and the certificates created with the Software belong to the User. The Software stores them only on the media and destinations the User chooses, in documented formats (SQLite database, .obf archives compatible with Obscura Flow, PDF/A certificates), so that the User can always retrieve them, including after this agreement ends. Browsing the library, verifying and restoring archives do not depend on an active license.

The Software never modifies or moves the original files the User imports: it reads them to compute their fingerprint and extract their technical metadata, and copies them into the archives the User creates.

6. Personal data

The Software contains no analytics and no automatic crash reporting. Its network connections are described in the privacy policy, available under Help › Licence and Legal Notices: the Publisher’s license server, the update check, and the services the User configures (offsite destinations, timestamp authority). The preserved files may contain personal data: the User, or the organization on whose behalf the User acts, is their controller within the meaning of Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR).

7. Preservation and backups

The Software helps the User keep verified copies of their files; it does not replace those copies. Preservation requires the User to keep archives on several separate media, one of them offsite, to store the keys they export in a safe place, and to verify their copies regularly. An encrypted archive whose key is lost cannot be restored, neither by the User nor by the Publisher.

8. Updates and support

The Publisher may release corrective or new-feature updates, governed by this agreement unless stated otherwise. The Software offers them itself; they are only installed with the User’s consent. Updates may migrate the database format; a backup of the database is then taken before the migration. Any support is defined by the terms of acquisition; requests go through the contact form at https://vault.obscuraflow.app/contact.

9. Warranty

The Publisher warrants that the Software performs substantially in accordance with its documentation. It does not warrant that the Software will be error-free or will meet the User’s particular requirements.

10. Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Publisher shall not be liable for indirect damages, such as loss of data, revenue or business, arising from the use of or inability to use the Software. The Publisher’s total liability is limited to the amount paid for the license during the previous twelve months.

These limitations do not apply in case of gross negligence or wilful misconduct, or to personal injury.

11. Third-party components

The Software uses third-party components, governed by their own licenses and listed under Help › Licence and Legal Notices › Third-party components.

12. Term and termination

This agreement takes effect on the first installation of the Software. If the User breaches its obligations, the Publisher may terminate it automatically fifteen days after a formal notice that remains unanswered. On termination, the User stops using the Software and deletes it; the User keeps its data (section 5).

13. Trademarks

Obscura Vault, Obscura Flow, Obscura Catalog and the Obscura Vault logo are names and distinctive signs of Oorun. Mac and macOS are trademarks of Apple Inc. Amazon S3, Backblaze B2 and Cloudflare R2 are trademarks of their respective owners. Other names mentioned belong to their respective owners.

14. Governing law and disputes

This agreement is governed by French law. The French version prevails over any translation. In case of dispute, the parties first seek an amicable solution. Failing agreement, the courts with jurisdiction over the Publisher’s registered office have exclusive jurisdiction.

15. Contact
