About

The life cycle of files, from intake to restore.

Obscura Vault manages the physical life cycle of files: bringing them in, storing them in .obf archives, proving they are intact, backing them up, and restoring them.

Ecosystem

Two apps, two distinct roles.

Obscura Vault and Obscura Catalog both derive from Obscura Flow. Vault takes care of files and does not describe images: cataloging is Obscura Catalog's role. The two products share neither data nor product code. Since 1.3.0, Vault receives the packages Obscura Catalog writes to hand it a library: a plain folder, described by a written contract.

Product principles

What guides Obscura Vault.

Public formats and algorithms, and results that state exactly what was verified.

Open formats

An .obf archive is built on tar and zstd, two open, publicly documented formats.

SHA-256 checksums

A standardized hash function (FIPS 180-4): the slightest change to a file changes its checksum.

Honest results

A check that could not take place stays “not verifiable”. It never counts as “verified good”.

Ed25519 signature

A standardized digital signature (RFC 8032) comes with every archive.

Optional encryption

AES-GCM encrypts an archive's content and detects any change to it; you choose whether to turn it on.
